Why are we more afraid of snakes than car accidents?
by Dr. Myles Cooley | Aug 5, 2013
It doesn’t make sense. Car accidents kill about 36,000 people a year; snake bites kill 6 people a year. One theory is that our primitive brain still controls some of our behavior. When human beings first inhabited the earth, snake bites were a real threat. According to Darwin’s theory of evolution, only the fittest would survive. The theory of evolution suggests that the “survival response” rather than logic or facts still dictates our emotional reactions.
